Hallo,
I just downloaded the newest version of StarWind Converter and I tried several times to convert my WIN10- system to a virtual mashine. I also scanned my system with sfc \scannow and repaiered all windows files by DISM \online... \restorehealth. Thus, the system is fine now, but this didn't help. After some seconds of conversion I also got an error message. The snapshot seems to work but then the file cannot be opend. I don't see what I can do. I also tried other tools (disk2vhd) and VMConverter). Has anyone an idea what to do?

If Disk2VHD also does not work, there must be something wrong with the machine. Could you please share the error message that you get?
You can do the following: create a VHDX -> Mount it to the system -> use a software like Macrium Reflect to mirror the FS on top of C:\-> P2V other disks (if applicable) in the meantime.

Thanks,

Backup with Paragon Software is working.

<<If Disk2VHD also does not work, there must be something wrong with the machine.
Probably yes but I don't see what because I repeared WIndows files, used sfx.

There are 3 options: I tried with use shadow volume use vhdx and without any selected option.

<<Could you please share the error message that you get?
From Disk2Vhd I get an error message with a red circle and a white cross inside: Error snapshotting Volumes.
With selecting "use volume shadow Copy" I obtain a file but trying to open it VM Ware tells me that it is corrupt.
Since it is the system there are 3 volumes: C: + "restauration partition" and a third one. I wonder why the names are \\?\volume{091713......]
(I just gave the beginning of the number) This strange name is similar for both additional partitions (100 MB and 864 MB).

><You can do the following: create a VHDX -> Mount it to the system ->
I could mount it but no content is shown. Only blank. FS test fails.

using Star wind Converter it strikes that the third of the given partitions (all belonging to the system C: and Windows)
is given with 0 Bytes. although it should be much bigger.
It strikes me that no problem to take screenshots is indicated - in contrast to HardDisk2 VM. It is followed by "Success"
Also "creating image file" is followed by "Success". then comes the file path.
Just after "Converting..." there is the error message File read error and Error read file.

Does this help?

Thanks.

That's the thing. You will use it to migrate the data to that volume and convert it afterward.
It seems that there is an issue with Volume shadow copy in your system.

Hallo,
thanks for this idea, but that's the thing:
On one hand I get an error with Disk2vhd v.2.02 (2021) using the option "Use volume Shadow Copy"
which seems to be a quite old version but I didn't find a newer one, on the other hand
I verified all shadow volume writers (status stable), deleted all shadow volumes and repaired once more the system.
Then I retried Disk2vhd, this time with administrator rights . - Error message window
On the other hand using Starwind-Converter there is no problem. I retried - also with Administrator rights:
Snapshot taking is successful - all three partitions. Isn't that identicsl with schadow copy?
Image file creation successful. Then New file PATH "Converting..." "Error read file -->
message window (nothing written in it except red cercle) -> line: "Error read file" --> Conversion failed.
Exactly the same error as before.
It would be helpful to have an option "verbose" or something like this and more details....

Any other idea?

Please see my original reply. Migrate the data instead of V2V or Disk2VHD: Create VHD -> Migrate to your there with Macrium Reflect.
There is an issue with Volume Shadow Copy in your system (i.e., the issue is not related to StarWind VSAN). This is why none of the solutions is working. That's why data migration, as I described above, could work.

UPD: Macrium Reflect might not work either, as it is also VSS-based.

Hello,
To copy the system I included three partitions: Windows partition C:, reserved to system and a third one after C:.
Macrium Reflect works. There are several important remarks to make:
1) In case of the file which could not be read by Windows Explorer, Macrium showed how much of the space is occupied.
However, I did not try to connect it in Macrium.
2) Macrium Reflect worked without failure and the file obtained is an image file.
In contrast to the file obtained with HD2VM the file was not accepted as virtual disk, so I could not
open it like a virtual disk by Windows. However, I could open it by Macrium in WIndows Explorer and all files are shown in two of three partitions,
The third one was shown as empty although 863 MB. Macrium says: that the Partition "Reserved to system" could not be opened.

I didn't know theat there are so many formats. I now produced a vmdx file with HD2V and tried to convert it with
StarWInd Konverter to a vmdk file which works with VM Player. (I didn't understood before that the format is wrong for VMPlayer).
Image open: Success, creation image file : Success, activating repair mode: error error opening file
As for Conversion to vmdk
Verify VSS error. However I verified them and all VSS writers work perfectly - status: stable.
I repaired the disk by CHKDSK \f \r and then I used VM vCenter Converter and it worked perfectly without problem.
After the successful conversiuon I tried once more to obtain the same file with Starwind COnverter just for verification:
taking snapshots: success, creating image file: success: new file (Path) Converting... "Error read file".

I found that the size of the partition (occupied, total, ..) - which is about 863 MB - is given by StarWind converter with 0 Byte which is wrong.
My other tools e.g. Paragon Harddiskmanager tell me that the 2 partitions are about 863 MB and 100 MB (reserved to system) .
Afterwards, I obtain exactly the same error as before. Unfortunately I cannot send you a file. The title of the message is:
File read error. There is a red cercle with a white cross inside the message, Two buttons: repeat and cancel. No text inside the window.
My problem is solved for me. but still there is a problem with Starwindconverter. By the way I know this program since more than 10 years,
I tried it several times and it never worked for me.

Good to read that you accomplished your quest.
The problem is not only with V2V Converter but also with Disk2VHD, which points to something in the system.
