I coveted a Windows 2008 R2 VHDX file to a VMDK to run on vSphere 6.7

When i added the converted VMDK to the VM and boot the VM, i see what looks like a BSoD flash by and then the VM tried to boot again and then repeats the same sequence.

Is there a step i missed or some setting that needs to be changed?

thanks

Greetings,

Please consider running disk conversion alone in the Repair Mode.

I am trying a new conversion of the file targeting the ESXi host with repair option.

can you clarify - "Please consider running disk conversion alone in the Repair Mode."

thanks

While converting the disk to VHDX/VHD you can select to run the conversion in Repair Mode which should make conversion easier.
Please consider it to be a backup plan.

H,

I did select "Repair Mode" when i selected the file.

The VHD is converted to VMDK file and stored on a drive of a Windows 2016 VM i have StarWind converter installed on.

I then copy the VMDK over to a VM folder.
I then edit settings of the VM, select "Add Existing Disk".
I navigate to the VM folder and add the converted disk.

When it boots, it goes into a booting loop.

Did you try converting an entire VM?
Could you provide me with the logs from C:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind V2V Converter\logs?
Can I have the VM properties?
Try changing boot type to BIOS please.

Him

We only have the Hyper-V VMDX file.

I have to check for the logs.

VM properties as in VMX file settings?

I recall that the boot type is BIOS, but I will check

Please convert the VHDX to VMDK seperately, provision a VM, and attach the disks to it.
VM properties as in VMX file settings?
No, just a screenshot of VM settings.
I recall that the boot type is BIOS, but I will check
Please see.

Can you specify what setting in the vmx file?

It will latke some time to get the file of the system as it is not reasonably accessible.

Also, i was told the below,,,

You CANNOT just convert the image from VHD to VMDK and expect it to BOOT!

Starwind V2V does no more, than just change the format, it does not change the hardware.

I need the VM settings you can find in ESXi. Please, click at the VM, go to Edit Settings, and take the screenshot. Is the boot option set to BIOS?
The VM boots from the VMDK (formerly it was VHD) that you attach to it. There is an Activate a repair mode option during conversion that helps to run a conversion of virtual disks.

May I learn if you have already logged a call with StarWind Support?

We are not permitted to take cameras into the building

The VM settings show that Boot option is set to
Firmware (BIOS)

The VMDK that was converted from VHD and is set as Hard Disk 1.

It is hitting the disk as i see the Windows 2008 startup process.

I booted and hit F8 to try a Safe Mode reboot with command prompt.
The widows shows drivers loading and then stops at CLASSPNP.SYS.
It pauses and then goes into the boot loop.

I ran the active repair process during the convert and when the Vm boots, it hit ..
system recovery options "the parameter is incorrect"

I did not log a call to support ..is that an option with converter?

Hi,
Looks like there are problems with Windows Server starting in new environment. I have found these articles https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... erversetup and https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/archiv ... in-windows.

Let me know if that works.
