I have to convert a VHD file (from Microsoft Hyper V 2008 R2) to VMDK (ESXi server format).
When I try to convert this VHD file I’m getting an error : « File I/O error (5) »… and the tool creates an empty vmdk file (0kB size) into destination folder.

I tried install V2V converter and to convert this same file on 3 differents computers (XP, 2003 and Win7) and I get same error message…
I'm sure that user used to convert this file has right access to destination folder (user is local admin and domain admin)
If I try to convert this same VHD file to another format (ie: VMWare Growable Image workstation) : converion works fine…

Could you please help me to solve this problem because I quickly need to import my HyperV file to my new ESXi server…

I thank you for your support…

Problem is solved !!! :D :P :D :P :D
I think that problem occured because my VHD file was not "clean".

Source Virtual machine was stopped during a snapshot and VHD file was copied as it... it was not a good idea... To solve the problem, I restarted my source virtual machine, I deleted all its snapshots and I stopped it. I re-copied its VHD file an now I can vonvert it without problem.
I'm sorry... It was a stupid fault...
So, I thank you VERY MUCH for your very good support !
Best regards,

Bruno

I am having the same issue where I can not create the ESX version but can create a Workstation version. I thought maybe it was something to do with anti-virus but I have disabled it completely and recreated the vhd file. The vhd file was created on the local physical workstation that I am trying to p2v.

Please, tell when exactly does this message appear? What page is it?

"Internal error 5" means that Windows cannot complete some file operation. This may happen if that file is used by other process.

This is CONVERTER and not SNAPSHOT MANAGER :) You need to remove unrequired snapshots in your hypervisor control panel and pass resulting image to StarWind V2V Image Converter for final processing (converting to whatever you want). That's the right way to go...

Hi folks,

I've the same problem here.
I tried to convert a vhd from Hyper-V 2008 R2 to a esx vmdk.

I've removed the vm from the hyper-v and started the converter. I've choosen my vhd as source and selected esx as output format. On the last page the converter gives me an File I/O Error 5.
When I am selecting vmware workstation as output format, everything works.

I've tried this on two servers and tried 4 vhd.

is there a way to get this up running?

Best Regards
Marco
