Make sure to follow this guide https://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware. ... -blackout/.
Use scripts to manually mark nodes as synchronized.
P.S. If you have a write-back cache, remove it as described here https://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware. ... -l1-cache/

Do the drives get connected with Microsoft iSCSI Initiator or does the StarWind make the connection?

No option available to synchronize as the free version is being used.
Please use SyncHADevice.ps1 from C:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind\StarWindX\Samples\powershell.
There are also several threads like this one viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6194&p=37569&hilit= ... %3E#p37569 that describe the way out of this problem.

It is the initiator who comes to establish the connection if it is set up correctly.
If the devices are not synchronized on both nodes, the Initiator can't connect.
