Is there documentation listed anywhere with the bone basic guide on how to configure the software for lab practices?

I have downloaded and installed the Virtual San Free version to use as a test environment so that I can learn how the software works and how to use it.

On top of this, I would like to figure out how to how SMI-S with the Virtual SAN Free software. Is this possible?

For the full list of configuration guides, check https://www.starwindsoftware.com/resour ... cal_papers - it is the place where you will find the instruction on how to configure certain setups.
If you use the latest build of StarWind VSAN Free, you will have to utilize PowerShell to create and manage your setup. Sample scripts are locates at "C:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind\StarWindX\Samples\powershell\" of your StarWind node(s). Based on the script samples provided, you are free to develop your own ones that would meet your requirements.
As far as SMI-S is concerned, for now there is an issue with creating HA devices via it, so it works with standalone disks only. This month we expect a new build to be released where this functionality is put back to the expected one. Check it from time to time at https://www.starwindsoftware.com/release-notes-build
