Hi,

I recently stumbled about an article (https://www.vladan.fr/2-nodes-10gbe-swi ... -starwind/) pointing out that a switchless setup with Virtual San can encompass up to 4 nodes.
Then I saw the release information about software raid in the VMWare appliance.

Since both functions combined would make a cheaply achievable home setup I am wondering whether I can combine those two options with a Virtual SAN Free config.

Ideally this would encompass 3 ESX hosts with a Dual NIC each in a triangle setup (for switchless), passing on a HBA which then provides the storage for the three ESX hosts.
Ideally that would be RDMA enabled but not sure whether I'd have to use iSCSI / iSer or whether that would work with nfs too somehow (which i'd prefer).

Thanks for any pointers :)

Hi rand__,
I guess you need this guide.
Also, it is better to use redundant RAID array instead of software RAID arrays. Here you can find recommendations.

Hi Oleg,

thanks for the link.
Will a similar setup also be possible with the linux appliance provided for ESXi?

Also, what is the cost/performance/other impact of mdadm vs a hardware raid?

Thanks,
regards

Hi rand_,
Yes, it is possible. You can additionally use this guide.
Also, what is the cost/performance/other impact of mdadm vs a hardware raid?
That really depends on this hardware itself.
