Hi,

I am using StarWind and MS ISCSI Initiator for my ISCSI connection. Both computers are running MS Server 2003. My StarWind version is 2.6.4 and my Build is 20050908.. When I use MS ISCSI Initiator to connect to a Physical Drive I get the error:

Log On to Target
Service Unavailable

However when I try to connect to a Ram Device it has no problem making a connection. The Physical Drive is actually a hardware RAID. We don't believe this is the problem because we have two other computers that are running MS ISCSI Initiator and StarWind and can connect just fine. Is there any reason why the Ram Device will connect while the Physical Drive will not?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Chris,

The recent StarWind versions do not allow mounting a disk drive via SPTI when it's used by the local system. This protects the disk's data structure.
And locking of the drive is done only on an initiator's mount request to let the drive be accessible from the local system when it's not used by a remote one.

I suspect in your case the RAID device was not free at the moment the initiator tried to mount it.

For RAID devices I'd suggest you using the ImageFile plugin to create virtual disks on it. The way is allows asyncronous request processing and is much more flexible than sharing the whole drive with SPTI...

I hope this helps.

Could you please explain how to use/configure the ImageFile plugin or provide a link to a manual or guide? The person that originally setup StarWind has left the company and didn't show anyone how to use it. I am still not sure I understand why the other machines were able to connect to StarWind while the new computers we are trying to setup will not. The RAID is not being used yet and we are not accessing it from the local system.

Thank you for help!

Chris,

The recent StarWind versions include online help that describes most of the operations the software can perform. Please take a look at the docs for more details.

The other issue can be if another initiator has mounted the RAID device and device settings allow only single initiator to access it at a moment.

Please send me the StarWind service's log file (from /logs subdir). It could shed some light on the issue.

Chris,

According to the log:
1) An ImageFile target uses a file as its stirage, not a partition (as you set).
You need to create an imageFile of the size you need and specify it in the Create Target dialog.

2) There should be more logs in the logs directory. I see no initiator connections in the log file.
If an initiator's login failed there should be some information in the log that describes what happened.
Best regards,
Valeriy
