Starwind VSAN newbie

Hello All,
Came across this product on the web while searching for storage for vmware. We are getting 2 esxi hosts for our development team who want to run 4 VM's on each host. Also i want to have another standby host in case for failover for any of the 2 esxi hosts. Was thinking about getting onboard storage for these ESXi hosts and running veeam backup and replication. Is this product mainly based on Hyper-V or does it support VMware as well. I have used HP VSA left hand os in the past, but for only less-critical data. Hope someone can explain the benefits Starwind can offer a better system in terms of reliability of the data
