I'm testing Starwind VSAN at home for possible use at work. I'm working with VMware ESXi 5.5.

I have a Free Spiceworks Friendly license for Starwind VSAN. I'm using the latest version 8198 and trying to use the deploy VSAN feature, to deploy a ready made VM to an ESXi server. The deploy VSAN installation goes fine and the virtual machine is created and powers on. When I try to register my license with virtual machine it comes back as an invalid key. If I try to install VSAN on top of Windows Server 2012 R2 the traditional way the key works fine. Does anyone know whey my key doesn't work with the deploy VSAN VMs?

Also, I have two Starwind VSAN Servers setup in the traditional way, with VSAN installed on top of two Windows 2012 R2 virtual servers. I'm using the latest version 8198. I can create standard devices and targets fine, but when I try to create a HA device I get "invalid partner info". This has been mentioned in this forum post https://forums.starwindsoftware.com/vie ... 4&start=15 I know this I supposed to be fixed in the next release, but does anyone have a work around that can be used now? I have tried the work around list in the above forum post, but it doesn't work for me. Also, does anyone know when the next release will come out?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Wesley,

Regarding your first concern:
Unfortunately, the license you have does not work with VMs. This article should shed a light on the licensing options https://knowledgebase.starwindsoftware. ... g-options/

Regarding your second concern:
There is no workaround, but our devs kindly agreed to provide you with the beta release. Please drop an email at support@starwind.com and our support engineers will provide you with the build.

Vitaliq,

Thank you for clarifying the license question. I take it that the Spiceworks Friendly license = Virtual SAN for vSphere Free?

Out of curiosity what is the difference between the Starwind VSAN created through the “deploy VSAN” wizard and the Starwind VSAN that you create by installing the software directly on a Windows 2012 R2 server VM? I realize that its easier to install and that its the Windows 2012 core OS, but are there any performance tweets or configuration changes that makes it perform better or easier to manage?

Thanks again.

As far as I know there are no major tweaks or differences, however, i always prefer to do all the things with my own hands to have a better understanding of what is going on in my environment
