Is there a good reason to choose Server 2012 Std over Server 2008 R2 Std as the base for our starwind iscsi free server? Maybe 2012 will be a bit faster?

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Does not matter much. Check for amount of free memory system leaves after install. More you have - more StarWind will be able to use as a write-back cache to speed up the I/O.
