Dear all,

We're currently running Starwind 5.7 in HA across 2x HP G6 DL370's. Both sides have 12gb ram, and are running great as far as i can see.

In order to benefit down from both nodes down protection and faster sync etc. I'm keen to move to 5.8, but when i run the installer (with admin rights, right clicked or from admin cmd prompt), i receive the following:

"An error occured while trying to replace the existing file: DeleteFile failed; code 5." (this is to replace the starwind service)

The service is stopped, completely and is not in memory.

We're running w2k8 R2 sp2 and up to date with updates.

Can anyone let me know what i'm doing wrong or how to resolve this?

Many thanks,

Jim.

I had the same problem. I just renamed the existing exe and setup will continue.

This one is known issue and we'll re-pack installation with this sorted out ASAP. Sorry for this!

lohelle, jimbul,

We have recently found out that the issue shows up when Windows Event Log window is open during installation. Event Log loads strings from StarWindService.exe file, and locks it. The problem can be resolved by closing Windows Event Log window.
This issue will be fixed in a few days.
Best regards,
Alexey.

hi there. event log wasnt open (not in an rdp session either) but we do have scom agents on the servers. is it possible they could also cause this behaviour as they gather events?

cheers,

jim

Jim,
Yes. I suppose, the agents are using the same engine as standard events viewer.
Best regards,
Alexey.

This is possible since they use the same tools to obtain information from the OS. Did you have any chance to reproduce the issue with the agents disabled?

Hi there, with agents disabled we see the same issue, also if i rename the installation file as suggested earlier we see the same issue.

Aside from UPS monitoring software the only other stuff on the box is the HP Proliant support pack and windows updates.

Many thanks,

Jim

Can you confirm that you have stopped StarWind service manually?
Could you kindly ensure that it stoped? It can be done by checking if you can see in the log string
%approximate time when service is stopped% Srv: Shutdown completed.

Hi thanks for checking:

Yes i can confirm the above, completely shut down according to both services and the starwind log:

1/27 9:20:11.119 1220 Srv: Shutdown completed.

Same response when updated package is run.

We're running 5.7.1721 with 3 HA targets and one non-ha.

Cheers,

Jim

Did this issue get resolved? What was the solution? I had this problem when I went from v5.6 to v5.7. I am hoping to avoid it going to v5.8.

anatoly called me to assist, but I didn't read the instructions and the upgrade requires downtime so we were not able to proceed(rtfm....) Will rearrange and get them on the phone when I do our London site in a few weeks.
