We have been running both Starwind servers and several Openfiler servers for over a year. Both systems have worked well for us. While working with the software RAID 1 capabilities in Starwind, it occurred to me that it might be possible to setup another 'brand' iSCSI target as the secondary mirror. I don't see any limiting factors in the Starwind interface when setting up the RAID1 that would indicate this is not possible, but I wanted to check. The reason we might want to do this is simply because we have several unused Openfiler servers that I would like to put into use as a 'backup' of our Starwind servers, and since the RAID 1 functionality in Starwind functions as an asynchronous mirror/backup, this is a lot easier to deploy than the HA DRBD on Openfiler, and should result in the same sort of redundancy.

Can anyone comment on why this would or would not be a good idea?

Well, you can either try to use StarWind HA - it`s as simple as mirroring, but much more advanced and reliable, compared to mirroring.
