I have .img files created in version 4.x I have now got version 5 without automatic HA but with mirroring. When trying to setup the mirror the only option I have to create the mirror is to use .mir files (this makes sense) but how do I now utilize my current data which is in .img format?

Mirror file - is file where to data be sent, and it will forward it to img files. So, on first step you create img. file, and on next steps you just choose existing img file. But remote mirror will not have the same data as local has. For it you need to re-write data to your RAID1 array. For it connect existing image to localhost and copy data to RAID.

Ok, I understand to a point - .mir is where the data is sent using .img files but you lost me on the remote server not having the same data. Is there any manual that I can follow to set this up? I really don't want to mess things up and lose the data in the current .img files.

So, I`ll write a short step-by-step guide:
Mount existing *.img device to Windows using iSCSI initiator.
Create new RAID1 device using new images.
Mount it to localhost using iSCSI initiator.
Copy data from *.img-based device to RAID1.
Delete existing *.img file
