Starwind VSS support for Windows OSs and APPs ?

Hi all,
I 'v just been watching the webcast of VMware Data Recovery.
One of the things I heard got me interested.
It was said that VMware tools VSS does work for Windows OSs Windows 2003 and up, but not for MS apps.
Is this true? If so:
1. What do you use instead of VMware tools VSS?
2. What does Starwind VSS support , OSs en APPs?
