Hello,

At present, I have several (Windows Server 2003) clients connecting to image-based volumes provided by StarWind version 3.5.4. Clients are connected accross dedicated gigabit Network Adapters and have the TCP optimisations set (Server and Clients).

I have configured a tape-backup unit onto the NAS Server and perform a VSS-based backup on the NAS Server. Intermittantly, a number of the NAS Clients experience NAS drive corruption and require that CHKDSK is run on the local Client.

Is this configuration supported and/or is there a better way to configure StarWind with another type of device?

Alternatively, would upgrading to StarWind version 4.x offer any additional options?

Ideally, we would like to perform agent-less 'remote' backups of the NAS volumes from the NAS Server.

Thank you.

Regards, Paul

Hello Paul,

Yes, we would recommend you upgrading to version 4.0 as it contains many improvements, fixes and enchancements.

As for the VSS, StarWind should have no issues related to the scenario you have described, except as for mounting the images located on a VSS snapshot - they just won't mount. But copying the image from a VSS snapshot to a physical or logical partition lets you mount the StarWind image files just fine whithout the necessity to perform disk check.

If there are other issues related to StarWind, or if there are additional details that you can provide on this, please submit a support request at http://www.starwindsoftware.com/support - we will be glad to resolve this as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Rob
