We installed a local SATA II 3 Gbps HD on a server and ran tests copying a large file (2 GB) from the Starwind devices to the local drive, first with incremental volume, then with growing image with snapshots.

Reboots took place on both, starwind and initiator server before each copy to even the field and remove file cache state as a factor.

While at the beginning we got comparable results, as the incremental backup device started taking snapshots and creating new sessions, its performance decreased.

At the point where the incremental backup had about 10 snapshots taken, the speed of copying from it to our local drive was approx. half than the growing image.

Copying from the local drive to the Starwind device remained consistent between growing image and incremental backup, even after 10 snapshots.

Testing between .img and IBV growing image yielded virtually identical results.

Is this consistent with your experiences?

Yes. CDP requires some internal housekeeping (actually - quite a lot) so it will be the slowest mode.
