Benefits of Server 2008

Hello,

I currently have two Server 2003 servers, both running StarWind.

They are running OK at the moment and performance is good.
However, I've been doing some reading and learnt that Server 2008 has much advanced networking performance, as well as the benefits of performance increases with a core install.

Two questions -

1 - has anyone run StarWind on server 2008 core? And have they noticed any (proven) performance gains?

2 - is the install of StarWind on server 2008 core simple? And is it documented?

Hi.
We have not tested StarWind on 2008 core yet.
Remember StarWind support installation only from GUI installer. So you have to find the way to connect to the Windows Server 2008 core and launch GUI installer. Maybe Terminal services can help you.

Well...

* Server Core IO performance is 2% to 5% higherh than the full install - some MS person documented that on his blog once. Was surprising to me, but he had quite some tests running.

* Install on server core is simple, once you get the server core running. Just call the setup from the command line. The main problem will be seetting up server core. Now that the setup utility some MS guy wrote is pulled (by MS - they hopefully release it themselves soon) this means qite some command line dealing until you have network, remote ports etc. set up... which is not THAT easy if you never did it before. There are some how-to's on the net. Loook for Hyper-V and server core - all the core setup (ip, remote acces etc.) are the same.
