Does CSV need expanding if VM storage increases

Hi all,

I don't know what to look for, so I apologize in advance if this topic already exists.

My question is, do I need to extend the CSV storage if I increased the storage of the VM? But the VMs storage is Dynamic and it is not taking up all the space. Picture of VMs HDD is below to get a better understanding at things.

Here is visible that the storage has been expanded on the VM, but it's only taking up ~40GB. The CSV is set to 300GB.


If necessary I can provide more info, especially of the hardware or the setup if needed.

Welcome to StarWind Forum. Your request does not relate to StarWind's solutions and seems to be within the general Hyper-V/Failover cluster questions.
I am happy to share my experience on this topic tho.
The short answer is "not immediately", as your VM seems to be having some room on the CSV.
Still, it is better to keep the CSV bigger. If the VM starts using more storage, it has some room. Ideally, you should convert the VM disk to FIXED, to avoid any downtime due to overprovisioning.
So, to sum up, you need to make sure that the VM has enough room on CSV after VHDX expansion.

Sorry I didn't mention it. I am, however, using Starwind free, thus the question

So, it's all good as long as the CSV is bigger than the needs of the VM. It does make sense. I just wanted to make sure, if it comes to that and one of the nodes crash, that the VM can failover to the functioning node and that the Starwind can "carry the load". Should be good, for now tho(the VM size compared to the CSV).
