Hi,

I've got a SBS 2003 VM on ESXi 4.1.0 and I'm trying to connect to a QNAP iSCSI target using the StarWind iSCSI Initiator 5.5

After clicking 'Add Device', 'Remote iSCSI device' and entering the correct IP I immediately get an error upon clicking Next. It tells me 'Failed to connect to remote server. Server may be refusing network connections. You may need to check firewall settings'

The Windows Firewall is disabled as RRAS is enabled; in RRAS no packet filter is enabled, only VPN is configured. There is no 3rd party firewall installed. If I try to telnet to the correct IP and port I get a blank screen with cursor. I can type, the cursor moves but there's no local echo. This behavior is exactly the same as on another VM (Server 2008) which does work, so I tend to conclude there is no firewall or anything blocking the traffic.

Trying to find out what's wrong I installed WireShark. When I let the iSCSI-initiator discover the target, there is not a single packet being sent or received, filtering on either the TCP port 3260 or the IP-address of the target. Why is StarWind iSCSI Initiator telling me it cannot connect when it doesn't even seem to try?

Kind regards,

Paul

Can you connect this device from other servers?
This look's like a firewall rule on the target server.

I can, an SBS 2008 in a completely different subnet, a 2008 Standard in a different subnet, a 2003 standard in the same subnet (and VMware host) and a VMware host in yet another subnet can all reach the target server.

Sniffing (via Wireshark) the network traffic shows not a single packet leaving the SBS 2003.

If I telnet (just 'telnet 10.1.1.134 3260' ) I get the exact same response from all the machines, and those packets do show up in Wireshark.

2003 doesn't hide membership of the Administrators-group like 2008 does, and I'm logged in as the domain administrator (as there's no local admin on a DC).

Can you actually use underlying NIC for any traffic? I mean can you telnet using this particular TCP/IP connection to the remote machine using port 3260? And can you try other connection for being used with iSCSI traffic?

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem

10/12 14:46:50.840 CMainFrame::PoolingServiceEvents: Event checking failed, status == 2

The NAS Box is a Thecus N5200PRO (iSCSi) the server is Window Server 2003. It is easy to setup Starwind and it works fast. But after 20 minutes or so of copying data, my server locks up and needs to be power cycled. I don't understand it as I can copy Gigabytes of data without a problem then suddenly it crashes.

The NAS box is connected directly to a second NIC in the server on a different subnet to the other traffic. There is no firewall on the server although it does run Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

I hope that you can help. I would very much appreciate it.

Are you actually using StarPort or StarWind? And what Thecus iSCSI box does here?

Dear Anton,

I'm sorry, I think that I did not describe my setup very well.

I am using Starwind Free Version 5.5 Running on a Windows 2003 Server with all service packs installed. The Thecus N5200Pro is a network attached storage box that I have configured with an iSCSI target. http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=32

The N5200Pro is attached directly to the Windows 2003 server by ethernet. No switch or router.

Thanks for your time

Anthony, current StarWind Version is 5.4 so either you're writing from the future :) or you are using another software product
Which I assume is StarWind iSCSI initiator. Please drop us the logs at support@starwindsoftware.com so we'll be able to dig out what's gone wrong
