Storage virtualization appears to be too expensive for SMB and ROBO, since it requires specially trained IT staff, as well as additional hardware and software at remote locations. Software Defined Solutions often conceal associated costs, related to additional software licenses or hardware, or may even initiate a vendor lock-in.

StarWind Virtual SAN is a software, which eliminates need in physical shared storage by basically “mirroring” internal hard disks and flash between servers. It has a minimalistic hardware footprint of only two nodes, which yet doesn’t compromise performance, and scales out to infinity. It doesn’t need any additional hardware or software, has no vendor lock-in, and can be easily managed by a typical system administrator with minimal experience in Hyper-V, VMware or Windows.

With StarWind Virtual SAN, it is possible to build hyperconverged infrastructure on the existing servers. If there is a virtualization infrastructure to be built from scratch, StarWind offers a turnkey hardware-software solution, powered by StarWind Virtual SAN and named StarWind HyperConverged Appliance.
