After a failed attempt to install on Storage Server, I read that it is not supported by Starwind - can't start the service during install. I don't have a choice for this environment and need to install on Storage Server. I didn't realize there was much difference between Standard and Storage Server.

Is there any way to install or are you going to support Storage Server in the future?

Thanks!

Change iSCSI port either for built-in iSCSI target or for StarWind. Also indeed Storage Server is not tested for production as it's OEM-only product.

Thanks for the quick reply, Anton.

I changed the configuration file with no change but the Windows iSCSI target isn't installed anyway and port 3260 is open.

I can run an uninstall but not everything gets uninstalled, like the service.

During installation, on the "Setup - StarWind Virtual SAN" states it's starting the service. At that point the screen hangs and I have to kill the process tree in task manager.

I don't know if it's relevant but in the Services console the service is named StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere though I downloaded the kit for Hyper-V. It shows starting and I can't do anything with it except set the startup properties to Manual and reboot. The service still won't start after a reboot.

Here's the output of the sc query:
ERVICE_NAME: StarWindService
ISPLAY_NAME: StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere
TYPE : 10 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
STATE : 2 START_PENDING
(NOT_STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x2
WAIT_HINT : 0x1388

I understand that R2 isn't supported so I appreciate any help you can provide to help me get this installed for this environment.

I'll bring techies to table to see if it's actually license misconfiguration (vSphere Vs. Hyper-V) or anything else non-Storage Server related.

See my other reply about "R2".

I would recommend to stop and disable the Microsoft iSCSI target services using the services.msc snap-in.
Once it's disabled you should be able to install StarWind normally.

Thanks for the followup, Anton.

Rob - Windows Server 2012 R2 is definitely supported. I'm dealing with Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 as the topic title suggests, but to avoid confusion I should not have shortened the name in my reply. I didn't mean to create confusion.

Thanks Bill - my mistake as well as not spotting the "Storage Server" bit in the title. Panic over :-)

Cheers, Rob.

I also just installed Starwind 8 build 7145 on Server 2012 R2, and was *not* presented with an option for either VSphere or Hyper-V. My license is for Hyper-V. The service that gets installed each time is "StarWind Virtual SAN for vSphere."
Is this a problem?

Sounds like a minor issue with a license generator giving wrong license ID. As long as everything else work just ignore for now. We'll fix ASAP.

Back to the topic of this thread, I still have the problem with installing on Windows Storage Server R2. Max, I missed your reply but I did not have the iSCSI target software installed on the box when I installed StarWind the first seven times. After seeing your reply, I installed the iSCSI target, stopped and disabled it, and tried the StarWind install again with the same result.

The installation hangs while trying to start the service. The service that is installed and hangs is the vSphere rather than the Hyper-V service.

This sounds like the license problem you've been referring to - I can provide a remote session or any log files. I appreciate any help.

ConfigUpdater.log after a reboot:

Cannot open 'StarWind.conf'.Creating new document
Error parsing file 'StarWind.cfg.bak' : Ü"!a: S
Stopping update process
