Hello all,

After reading many positive and optimistic posts about the Starwind taperedirector I decided to set up a test server and see what Starwind had to offer.
Unfortunatelly I ended up in downloading many different components, version, etc. Helpfiles of PDF's show obvious older versions and after to much time spend getting frustrated what I shouldnt' be.
Is there someone who can give a short explanation about what is needed to set up a simple SCSI to iSCSI tape.

regards .

There's ONE product now called StarWind Virtual SAN V8 and free version of it incorporates Tape Redirector functionality free of charge.

Hello,

Is there also some kind of manual ?
Your "new" quick start is about version 6 I believe.
The installation of version 8 ends with two error messages about (un)installing the VSS provider module
uninstallstarwindprovider.bat create process failed 267
installstarwindprovider.bat same error
The mentioned path ".../hw/uninstal....bat" also does not seem to be available.

Thanks

QA guys are working on one now (updating 5.xx -> 8.xx branch). Technically old one should work as not much had changed.

You don't need VSS for TR functionality. I'll ask engineers to take a look why you have issues with install / uninstall however.

Hello Anton thanks for answering.

Installed Virtual San v8 without the VSS parts and it installed flawlessly.

But then......

None of your technical documents that I have seen so far gives me any clue about the next step.

I have a Starwind management console but what to do there ?? Options ????
Deploy VSan
NAS Configurator
V2V converter

None seems to have anything to do with Tape redirector. I would expect some SCSI/iSCSI configuration but is nowhere to be found. From the documents I understand that I have to add a server.
But cannot connect to localhost as there is no Starwind service or whatsoever running and port 3261 is not there.
Do I have to install something else to get a local service running ??. Totally unclear to me unfortunatelly.

If your intention is to have me nosing around your product you are quite successfull and I'm getting very curious but for the short time I hoped to setup a temporary tape solution but am not getting any further.

Thanks.

Hi

Tried to use the Free license on my Tape Redirector server, and it says it's not licensed. Did I make a misstake to upgrade to V8? If so when will TR be added to the Product? Is there any way of getting a TR license?

Use trial key for now and contact sales. TR was occasionally disabled with a default free key. We'll fix this ASAP. No need to re-install, just another XML key applied.

Hello Anton,

Very thankfull for your quick replies, see that you do have a server to configure. SW-QA-PC6-PC on your localhost machine. After my installation there is no server / service running.
I can add a localhost but cannot connect as it tells me that the Starwind service is not found.

Just installed the Starwind-v8.exe
Full installation minus Software and Hardware VSS Provide

But it seems that I have to install more than only those components.

Thanks

You install StarWind Service on your machine with a tape drive attached and connect to it from the other machine running Management Console.

Hello Anton,

I'm probably a very dumb person but what do I do to install the "Starwind service" ?
Where does the setup package come from ???

Do I have to install the Virtual San again and will it install the service ??

Currently installed the Virtual San software on the machine with the tape attached. No service available though.

Thanks.

Also make sure that 3260 and 3261 tcp ports are free on that machine.
You can check it launching cmd.exe and running "netstat -abn" command.

This is our problem and not yours :( If you run unsupported version of OS (Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP) you're not going to see "Service" in the list of available options. Please confirm what you have and we'll figure out how to tell to customer "this option is N/A" instead of just hiding it. Thank you!
