I have a Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host with a SAS-attached LTO6, and I'd like to run Backup Exec on one of the VMs. Can Tape Redirector provide the interface between Backup Exec and the LTO drive?

Yes, it's a fully supported scenario!

Thanks Anton. Does your reply mean not yet'?
If so, when do think it will be available?

This means it's supported right now. I'll update my original post. Thanks!

Hi Anton,
So I installed TapeRedirector on my Hyper-V 2012 R2 and the service has started. The trouble is, I can't configure it using the Management Console because it's pure Hyper-V, i.e. no GUI. Therefore, how can I configure it to share its tape drive?

Management Console can run anywhere on the network including your Hyper-V host in some of Windows desktop VMs basically in a loopback.

Thanks. So I installed TapeRedirector on one of the VMs and launched the Management Console, but I can't connect to the Hyper-V host itself.
The service is definitely running on the host (10.164.80.109).
Also, how do apply the license key in Hyper-V? There's no GUI to do that either.

I`m pretty sure that something prevents Console from connecting to the service on your Hyper-v host. Can you confirm that ports 3260 and 3261 are not blocked in the FW, not busy by some other process and that Starwind is not blocked with the AV software?
Can you provide us with the screenshot that`d illustrate that the service is running and that it is on the server with the IP that we see on your last screenshot?

The license key will be installed through the Mgmt console after you`ll connect it to the service.

Tape Redirector uses different set of data/management ports (one of the reasons we're not going to have TR as a stand-alone app with V8 anymore and would just embedd this functionality into StarWind core).

Hi, I thought you'd just like to see the error that appears on login to the Hyper-V console. Not sure if it's relevant:

Here is the StarWind service running:

Here is the Hyper-V host firewall settings for StarWindTapeRedirector:

The firewall is set to 'Off' and there is no anti-virus software installed.
Hope that helps, although I'm thinking now if it's not been tested in this environment I won't continue any further. I can't risk messing with the host too much.

OK, but maybe something else is using the ports that are used for TR functioning (33268, 33269 and 33270)?

Hi,
Here are the StarWindTapeRedirector ports:

TCP 10.164.80.109:33268 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING [StarWindTapeRedirector.exe]
TCP 127.0.0.1:33268 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING [StarWindTapeRedirector.exe]
TCP 0.0.0.0:33269 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING [StarWindTapeRedirector.exe]
UDP 0.0.0.0:33270 *:* [StarWindTapeRedirector.exe]

More importantly, can you explain to me why the Management Console is trying to connect over port 3261?

That is correct question: TR should use different port. Can you try to remove that host from the console and add it back again, but this time you need to specify the 33269 port
