I have successfully got it working. You do have to install that oledlg.dll file. Your installer will not start without it.

Manager on my workstation
Service on Microsoft Hyper-V 2012 R2 free edition.

I have added my two tape devices in the manager and presented them to the Virtual Machine.

Unitrends is throwing an error trying to connect to them. But it does see the iscsi target. I am going to talk to unitrends about the error.

Does the Microsoft iSCSI init service need to be started, or should it be disabled because the Starwinds services take care of everything?

Microsoft iSCSI Initiator service doesn't affect StarWind iSCSI Server operation. Moreover, it is the most convenient option for connecting iSCSI Target to the Windows-machine.
Microsoft iSCSI Target will interfere with StarWind iSCSI Server, as it occupies iSCSI TCP/IP port (3260) on the server. Microsoft iSCSI Target is disabled in Windows 2012 by default.

I can confirm that just having the StarWind Tape Redirector software does not work in my setup. Problem is that you cannot connect to it remotely through the manager. (The one loaded with the Redirector software.)

If you install the iSCSI SAN version you can then connect to it remotely through the manager. From there you setup your tape drive via SPTI/TAPE. (The one loaded with the iSCSI SAN version.)

Setup.

Server with PCI-e SCSI card with HP Ultrium 4 tape drive hooked up.
OS loaded on said server: Microsoft Windows Hyper-V 2012 R2 free edition.
Drivers for tape drive loaded and verified.

Tape Redirector is using other pair of ports 3260/3261 then iSCSI SAN does by default. What ports are you trying to connect to?

This is unexpected behavior.
Current release is outdated and we are preparing new version of Tape Redirector based on V8 core now.
Please drop a letter with reference to this topic to support@starwindsoftware.com and we'll send you a key for the current StarWind iSCSI SAN 6 product with functionality that allows redirecting tapes and libraries.
You will be able to update to Tape Redirector 8 later when it is released.
Best regards,
Alexey.
