Hello,

I have been trying out the tape redirector on a Hyper-V guest with the tape library connected to the physical host. It sees the drive on the library but not the library itself?

Host System is a Windows Server 2012
Hyper-V Host is a Server 2008R2
Tape Library is a DELL Powervault TL2000

Any help is appreciated!

Get a log, zip and send to support@starwindsoftware.com for analysis. They would also provide you with an updated link (if req'd).

Hello,

thanks for the quick response. I contacted the support already but since it is a free product there is no support available.

This is not true. The product is fully supported. Please let me know in private who had said anything like this or so.

I had the same problem. I have tape redirector running on server 2012 with the TL2000 connected to the machine directly. I could see the drives but not the library in the starwinds console. After talking to Dell support it turns out that the drive that was connected to the 2012 server was not set as a control path. After enabling that feature in the TL2000 web interface the library became available. I was then able to connect a server 2008 vm running on an ESXi 5.1 host to the one of the drives and library using the ms iscsi initiator. Backup Exec 2012 running on the vm is able to control the TL2000 without issues. I've seen elsewhere here and on spiceworks some registry edits that will speed up the throughput to the TL2000. Will try those later this week.

How's your backup and restore working with our software? Can you spawn a dedicated thread about your config with some details? Thanks!

Sure, but I've only done limited testing. It works! As I noted above the throughput to the library was slow but the registry changes that are advised appear to work based on the feedback I saw over on spiceworks. I'm being held back at the moment by a problem with Backup Exec 2012. It is extremely slow backing up Server 2012. I'm waiting for an engineer to call me back about the problem. I sent Symantec support some logs yesterday.

Symantec will tell you they don't want to support this :( Fastest way would be to create a thead on something popular like referenced SpiceWorks to get a bit of experience from other people (MS forums don't work for this unfortunately). We're not Symantec specialists here (and there are tons of other backup apps capable of doing tape - tons, and that's why we give away Tape Redirector free of charge rather then sell it).

Yes, indeed. I'm testing Unitrends Enterprise Backup now also. I have to call Symantec too often.

Unitrends are not bad (they have quite a lot of the ex-StarWind sales in their team BTW, but it's not related to the product anyway) but I personally prefer VEEAM.
