I am running Hyper –v core 2012. I downloaded the free tape re director sosftware. I've tried to install tape redirector under hyperv 2012 core.
During the Installation I selected the redirector and the console and specified that I had a key. Towards the end of the installation I got an error. See enclosed screenshot.
I reinstalled the redirector without the console, but installed the console on a separate PC and also supplied the key. The console could not talk to the redirector. I've enclosed the logs from the redirector.
Is there a fix for this?

Hi akkykhan,
First of all I'd like to notify you that it's not the best idea to post open log in the forum message
http://www.starwindsoftware.com/forums/ ... html#p4164
If there is a chance - please send a complete logfile to support@starwindsoftware.com
Also, could you please tell me which IP range you're using to manage the Tape Redirector?

Well, based on the screenshot I see that you're trying to launch tape redirector on a Core OS which isn't possible.
I will kindly ask you to install the tape redirector on a complete(non-core) Windows installation.
Then run the Management console, press the "add server" button, enter the address of the machine where the tape is connected.
(172.16.100.3 - if you're connecting from the same network)

Hi,

Too clarify the tape director cant be installed on hyper v core 2012? We have two VM's running on the core server. One is running SBS 2011 and the other Windows 2008. So I guess you want me to install the software on one of the vms? I want to run the software on the SBS 2011 VM. Thanks

Tape redirector can be installed on WS2012 core.
You have to install it on the hypervisor first (so it could see the attached tape device).
Now grab any Win7/Win8 machine (or any which has Windows GUI) - Install just StarWind Management console.
In the StarWind management console click "add server" IMPORTANT step - change the Port to 33269, this will allow you to manage the tape redirector service on the remote host.
Then, create a dedicated network to the VM which will connect to the tape device.
On the VM - go to the iSCSI initiator, connect the tape device passed through by StarWind Tape redirector and then install the tape device drivers.
Please refer to page 5 - 18 of this guide:

Hello Max,

So what you are saying is tape redirector does not install in hyperv 2012 core but only if the bare metal server is running windows server 2012 core and hyper v 2012.

Am I right?

Thanks

Technically, you can install it in any VM, but it will make no sence since VM doesn't see physical tape attached to the system.
So it only makes sence to install the tape redirector as Host OS level application, then you'll be able to see and pass through the tape devices to your VM level.

I am still confused about your last reply. So what you are saying is tape redirector does not install in hyperv 2012 core but only if the bare metal server is running windows server 2012 core and hyper v 2012?

Am I right?

I'm sorry but I don't see any difference between "install in hyperv 2012 core" and "bare metal server is running windows server 2012 core"
You have a clean server with no OS, then you install WS 2012 core. After that you install Tape redirector.
