Tape Redirector with ntbackup problems

I am trying to use a Quantum Untrium 2 tape drive in a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine to recover files from a backup made using ntbackup. I have installed the Tape Redirector software on the server; configured it to present the tape drive as an iSCSI interface. My client (virtual) machine is running Windows XP SP3, and can connect to the iSCSI target using either the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator or the StarWind iSCSI initiator (I have tried both).
With NTBackup on Windows XP I can read in the file list from the tape, eject the tape, retension it and so on, but when I try to restore a file from the tape it fails with this message:

There are no messages in the Windows system event log. I have attached the Tape Redirector log the entries from 17:35 onwards are a typical example of the problem.Error: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media.
Error reported: Invalid command.
There may be a hardware or media problem.
Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
