Given: StarWind on W2003 Server with StarWind 2.4.1, StarPort on WinXP SP2 mapping to tape drive on server.

A NTBackup full system backup works fine. When I attempt to restore a file from the backup, the tape rewinds, then I get the error "Error: an inconsistency was encountered on the requested media". The W2003 server is able to read this tape directly. I tried setting the log level for StarWind to 3 and the problem does not occur and the restore is successful. When I go down to log level 1 or 2, it fails again, but no obvious error is recorded in the log file.

There appears to be some sort of timing problem, but how to narrow down the problem?

Hi,

Recent StarWind builds should work with tape drives good.
Which StarWind build do you use?

Also we fixed a tape related problem in StarPort about a month ago. But I suspect some other tape issue could still exist.
Not many people use tape devices shared with StarWind, so we have very limited feedback about this mode.

Could you please try the MS iSCSI initiator instead of our StarPort to access the shared tape drive?
If it works OK, this is definitely a StarPort's problem. So we'll be able to pin out the issue.

Thank you in advance.

StarWind iSCSI Target Version 2.4.1 (Build 0x20040915, Win32)

With Microsoft ISCSI 1.05a, the restore fails "The device reported an error on a request to read data from media". This time there was an error in the StarWind log -

Thank you for the info.

It seems to be a StarWind's problem...

We'll try to fix the issue.
Best regards,
Valeriy
