im trying to shre my sony sdt9000 scsi dds3 tape drive to a virtual machine running windows 2003 sbs r2 sp2.

The romovable archive service cannot write the label and ntbackup cannot start writing.

i have this esrrors in log:

9/26 14:24:14.082 cc8 SPTI: '\\.\Tape0': scsiPassThrough failed: Parametro non corretto. (code: 87).

the version of the software is 3.5 Build 20070809.

yesterday i tried with a windows 2000 server sp4 (non virtualized). All ok with romovable storage but ntbackup told "cannot detect the media".

after the error the tape remains allocated to ntbackup but with the wrong name: "free media label xxx"

no i didn't, i'm newbie here and i've only found posts that says that spti problems have been fixed within the current version of Starwind. (but i already have it)

The fix works fine and now while i'm writing i'm doing a tabe backup of a virtualized machine with windows 2003 sbs r2 sp2.

Thank you very much!

SPTI problems inside the StarWind have very little to do with the MS initiator buffer size :)

Good. Please keep us updated about the progress.

unfortunately, the problem with windows 2000 server (not virtualized) persist.

All ok the operation in "removable storage": "insert", and "prepare" commands as well as the "eject" command.

When ntbackup loads the tape and seem to start the backup, it says "unable to detect the backup device selected" (i traslated, the message is in italian language).

the rsm has allocated the tape to ntbackup but the name remains wrong "free media label xxx".

i'll try with another 2000 server virtualized...

thankyou!

Could you please send us StarWind logs (last file found in the Logs folder) to the support@starwind.com with a detailed description of what you did (step by step). Thank you!

ok. I've found no errors in the Starwind Log, just the login and the logout.

the machine with the initiator is an old Fujitsu-Siemens primergy server with 512mb ram, intel p3 500 processor, raid5 with 4 33 gb scsi 10k rpm +2 hot spares on Mylex DAC1164P controller. A scsi cdrom on a Symbios Logic 8951U.
An USR 1 GB lan controller. Microsoft iScsi Initiator: Initiator-2.05-build3392-x86fre
So: windows 2000 server sp4 retail.

Machine which host Starwind iscsi terget: intel P4 hypertreading (prescott), chipset VIA PM800 with 8237 southbridge, with 512 mbram, ide 80gb mator harddisk, 2x 160gb maxtor sata hd, an Adaptec AHA-2940AU pci scsi controller linked to a Sony SDT-9000 dds3 tape drive. SO: win xp sp2 on the ide disk, 2 sata disk are dinamic disk members of a 300gb raid0 volume.

what i did? just tried to save a folder with ntbackup on the tape through ISCSI SPTI.

here is the log:

Hi,

Do you mean that it works from the virtualized Win2000 machine and fails from the real one?

Have you tried doing the same things from a Win XP SP2 or Win 2003 SP1+ machine? Any differences?

yes it is. Virtualized on a 64 bit machine (2003 server enterprise x64 with virtual server 2005 r2 sp1 x64 edition) a sbs2003 server guest and a 2000 server sp4 guest worked well.. (once corrected the "maxtransfer size parameter of the initiator)

i didn't try on physical machines, i'm gonna try but i've just entered the registration code, and now i connot make SPTI. :(

There could be some third-party filter driver in the Win2000 host, that prevents it from working.

Do you mean that after installing your license, the SPTI module became disabled?

Does your license a Professional one? The Standard Server license doesnot allow the SPTI module.

i've downloaded the free version and i've been in evaluation mode...

now i've reinstalled and i can do SPTI again.

With a phisical 2003 server r2 sp2 x64 edition it worked fine...

this one have a 1gbps ethernet nic connected on a 100mbps switch...

the phisical 2000 serve that don't work have a USR 1 Gbps Nic connected at a 1Gbps port of a switch which has 24 more 100 mbps ports.

the scsi target has 100 mbps nic connected at a 100 mbps switch...

maybe nic working at 1 Gbps nic is the problem?

tomorrow i'll try a phisical xp pro sp2 with 100 mbps nic and i'll let you know...

thanks..

Does it work now with the most recent StarWind version?
