Hi,
Running ESXi within VM workstation 7 and trying to access a LUN in Starwind. The ESXi host does not see the LUN, so I tired pinging and believe the issue is there. Should I change the Interface to the destination gateway 192.168.0.254?

Here are the logs

1) Dump V5.4 and replace it with V5.5 as soon as possible. V5.4 is outdated and has performance suffered .

2) Ping uses ICMP and StarWind uses TCP ports 3260 (iSCSI traffic) and 3261 (StarWind private control). What you CAN do to check the route is try to connect with telnet to both listed TCP ports.
In case of failure I'd start checking firewall settings on StarWind Windows box and then ESX network route.

Hi Anton,
I upgraded to 5.5- appreciate that.

I also found the help guide the VM workstation guide- most helpful

I have MSiscsi up with the virtual disk recognized in windows.

It appears Starwind needs to have a VM adapter IP dedicated to it. Without a dedicated adapter I can not log in, but with I can not ping between ESXi and starwind ( I checked ESXi firewall, checked and even turned off Kaspersky firewall, turned off Windows firewall)

Thanks in advance

1) Good.

2) Hold on for a second... So you have VMware Workstation with Windows-based virtual machine running StarWind inside the box? And you want to connect from outside the VM. Right? Same machine? Other machine on the physical network? Do you have BRIDGED network adapter or NAT? More feedback required.

Hi,
I am looking for the following on a windows 7 PC
1. run Multiple ESXi hosts- want to stay way form ESX and having to load Red hat
2. have a virtual ISCSi that is accessible to all the ESXi VM's
3. try not to load RHEL if i can help it ( others internally run ESX and NFS mounts on a LINUX VM

I have tried different IP configs and to be honest- Starwind seems fickle in when it wants to connect- leaving the PC alone- sometimes it does and sometime s it does not.

i think this is a common request (laptop partitioned to run a virtual network for demo/training but the web is absent of a end to end guide on how to do this

Something is really really wrong now. I can not bridge- I restore defaults in virtual network editor

If there is not a VoD or guide for doing this- im going to uninstall and reinstall Worksation and starwind and try again

basic questions i have
- do either program car what Windows 7 host OS says the IP address is?- VM client does for sure
- where is a clear definition of bridged /NAT and host hopefully with diagrams or a VoD.

thanks

I think a better way to put it is

In normal routing/switching
- if I have no IP address, I need to be in the same VLAN to talk to other devices
- If I have an IP address, I cam L2 swith in my subnet or Ip route between subnets via a default gateway or an explicit route

Does Starwind have a default gateway or route? and can it reside on the host and talk /service the VM's within workstation

Hello Bob,
StarWind usually does show all the available targets on all interfaces available.
I really recommend to have the network bridged so your virtual machines are able to ping the Laptop's VMware Virtual Network connection IP address. then you should see the targets from the VMs. I would also recommend you to check if you need any domain seervices running on the OS, ESXi VM may require it.

Hi Max
Here is what I have

Actual IP on VMnet1 in DOS 192.168.0.1
Virtual Network on VMnet 1 Host 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0 (/24 mask)
ESXi IP 192.168.0.202

I can not ping 192.168.0.1when i set ESXi to bridged or host or Specify custom network VMnet1

When the VM starts, it looks for VMnet 0 which does not exist

Аnd what IP does the StarWind service use?
I mean what IP address is configured in Windows to be bridged to the VM environment

Starwind is configured to 192.168.0.201

VM can not ping it
PC can nto ping it

When i try to bridge the VM (instead of specifying VMnet1) I get
The network bridge on device VMnet0 is not running. The virtual machine will not be able to communicate with the host or with other machines on your network.
Failed to connect virtual device Ethernet0.

Ok, can you ping the DNS and the gateway from the ESXi ?
If not - you need to review the networking and configure it for correct operation.
By the way, have you checked the firewalls in the OS ?

Hi max,
i totally uninstalled and reinstalled Workstation 7- that has fixed the VMnet 0 auto bridging that could not be set back

I can do the following
- ping the PC host VM adapter form ESxi only in host mode
- cannot apparently assign more that 1 ESXi host to a PC host VM Adapter (do have have to add virtual adapters for every VM?)
- assigning a second virtual switch and using it for "data" traffic does not work- you can not ping either between machines)

I looked thru your docs and Workstation 7 docs and it is not clear how to set up. Is there a reference somewhere. I am looking to
- be able to access Starwind and Workstation VM's via vSphere client thru the host
- be able to have ESXi VM's talk to Starwind (assume over another network and adapter)
- run all this in Workstation and on ESXi (no linux guest OS)

Is this feasible?

This is definately making sence. The main document you need to look through is the VMware Workstation guide
http://www.vmware.com/pdf/ws71_manual.pdf
I would also like to note that StarWind can be installed on Windows 7, this will give you more performance for your demonstraions.
