I was looking for an offline backup solution as a response to ransomware or wiper malware. Naturally a tape solution would accomplish this. However, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how virtual tape libraries can simulate air-gapped storage. If software is able to turn storage access on or off, then it's not actually "offline". Can anyone explain in detail how the tapes can rotate and remain offline during a threat response? I am currently using Veeam B&R to backup servers locally as well as to an off-site repository. Thanks in advanced.

Welcome to StarWind Forum. In a nutshell, there are 2 ways to build air-gapped backup storage.
Air-gapping can be achieved if you bring the entire infra offline with no access outside.
If you still want to de-stage data to the public cloud, internal cloud mechanisms (e.g., immutability) should prevent data from being altered by malware.
