Hello,

I have been using for years now other storage visualization products on our customers sites.

We deployed Starwind on a customers site at v5 upgraded to v6 and cant wait to upgrade to v8, it has been a great success. But we only have a single customer using starwind because of a single feature we couldn't do with Starwind. I am hoping v8 brings this or if I have completely missed the feature coming into the product, either way.

Can you have 2 x Starwind Servers in HA but only a single pool of storage. HA without mirroring.

Reason for this is... When we are selling storage visualization one of the reasons is to take control of all of the storage onsite, single window to managed the storage, easily replace aging arrays, performance enhancement etc.

But a lot of customers don't then want to mirror that storage, they love the idea of it all being managed by something like Starwind but are not comfortable with it all been behind a single Dell R720 or whatever we decide to deploy it on.

Examle;
College has 5 SAN's from different vendors making up say 30TB, they have asked us to quote for some storage, we go along talk to them about why would you have 5 different vendors etc etc and say you should look at Storage Visualization.

What we would have to do, if we have to mirror for HA is quote for 2 x Starwind boxes + 30TB of storage + what ever the additional was they wanted in the first place which might have been say 10TB.

This makes the 10TB around £7k worth of storage very expensive because we actually had to buy the 30TB to mirror the current storage then 20TB to give them the 10TB they needed.

If we could HA without the mirror we would be selling 2 x Starwind boxes and the 10TB of storage. Then further down the line we can start to replace older units adding more storage mirroring for primary data etc etc and grow out into what would be a more Starwind type model.

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

What you want is to aggregate multiple storage LUs into single **non** fault tolerant storage pool. Unfortunately this is not what we do now and we also have no plans to implement this functionality any time soon either... It could be comparably easy to do but we don't have a lot of requests like this. Sorry for this!

That's a straight forward enough answer, thank you.
