When attempting to add the Starwind iSCSI SAN with SMI-S add-on as a storage provider in SCVMM 2012, I receive the following error:
Error (26263)
Registration of storage provider SWSan for user qsidomain\vmmadminra failed from SCVMM12SP1.qsidomain.local with error code HostAgentFail.

Recommended Action
Specify valid provider, port and user credentials for storage discovery.

The RunAs account is a member of Domain Admins

I have set the authentication for the Starwind server to Anonymous (after numerous tries with different accounts and passwords)
The "StarWind SMI-S Agent: Storage Provider for SCVMM" dated April 2012 is full of obsolete screen shots, so I'm trying to match things up as best I can.
I need to get this to work and am out of ideas. No matter what I do at this point, the wizard always hangs when discovering the provider and it always generates this error.
StarWind is installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, that machine is a member of domain. The SCVMM server and the StarWind server on the same subnet, as are the two Hyper-V hosts. The Hyper-V hosts can see the iSCSI targets. There's no direction on what the target config should be. Should the Hyper-V hosts be connected to the targets? There's just not enough documentation on how to get this to work and no mention of troubleshooting steps.
Please help!

twalters,

It seems that you have no any already created target on StarWind or have some other mistake in configuration of SMI-S agent.
You should to create minimum ONE target manually. This version of SMI-S can't create targets automatically.

Among other things, I suggest you to wait for a new build of SMI-S agent that will be available soon. Version that published on the site is too old.

Thank you for your reply. Is working with the current SMI-S download feasible at this time, or is it that it does not work with VMM 2012? I'd like to get this to work so I can demo it.

I do not understand what you mean when you say "you have no any already created target on StarWind" please clarify. The SMI-S provider was configured per the instructions in the document found here: http://www.google.com.my/url?sa=t&rct=j ... VUAbuhu4MA

Any help appreciated.

It should work with VMM 2012. In that version exists only limited support. No assign to host, only one concrete pool. No target creation.

I mean that you should create one or more targets manually before you try to use SMI-S provider from VMM.

So, just to doubecheck, have you accomplished actions described on the pages # 6 and 7 of the document that you have mentioned?

Yes, I have two targets defined. Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 machine running Starwind iSCSI Server v6.0.4837. When I attempt to add the storage to the Providers node in the Fabric workspace in SCVMM 2012 I receive:
Registration of storage provider [ ... ] for user qsidomain\vmmadminra failed from SCVMM12SP1.qsidomain.local with error code HostAgentFail.

Specify valid provider, port and user credentials for storage discovery.

ID: 26263

SMI-S provider is v0.61. When attempting to connect from SCVMM, I am providing the IP address of the iSCSI Server (which is on the same subnet), I am choosing the SMI-S CIMXML protocol, using port 5988 (no SSL) and the RunAs account is a member of Domain Admins. The Starwind iSCSI Server and the SCVMM server are both domain-joined. SCVMM12SP1 is running Windows Server 2012 and SCVVM 2012 SP1 (beta).

I have completed the tasks in the SMI-S guide to the best of my ability. Please let me know if you require further information.

Is SMI-S agent installed on the same host with the iSCSI Server?
You should provide the IP address of the SMI-S agent, NOT of the iSCSI Server.

Yes, SMI-S agent is located on iSCSI Server

Dear twalters,

Please, try this new build:
http://starwindsoftware.com/tmplink/Sta ... ew_dev.exe
(it is not available from our site download page yet)

Config-file structure was slightly changed.
Now it is possible to ad multiple concrete pools with different settings.
Use only FLAT concrete pool (Image File plugin).
Type of pool in config file should be "Image file" -- it is case sensitive!
You should manually tweak a config file. You can remove other pools from config file if you want.

Hi.

I think the most effective way to solve this is through the remote session. Would you be so kind to email the remote session request with the reference to this topic in the email subject to support@starwindsoftware.com?

Thank you

I am always getting an error: registration for storage provider [ ... ] for user starwindsan01\starwind failed from vmm.mydomain.com with error code hostagentaccess denied
my setup:
win OS 2012 v.6.2 build 9200 – installed on starwindsan01 and vmm servers,
VMM 2012 r2 is on vmm server,
starwind iscsi 8.0.6180 installed on starwindsan01.
I have tried authenticating with local user and domain one still same results ( both local admin and domain user has been added with: cimuser-a-u <username>-w <password> )
I did follow all of the steps mentioned in the document http://www.starwindsoftware.com/images/ ... -SMI-S.pdf
Another step i tried was telnet to Starwind server with port 5988 and didn't get any prompt for username or password even so i changed "enableAuthentication=true" in cimserver_current.conf AND cimserver_planned.conf
Any suggestion would help, thank you

lvolk,

Check forward and reverse hostname to IP address translation of your DHCP server (that part of your AD).
There is possible problems concerned with address translation issues inside Windows-domain.

Check connection to localhost 5988 (at SMI-S host).
Check: is StarWind SMI-S Agent started and working?
Check: firewall rules.
