Hello everyone :)

I originally wanted to post in the sub-forum "StarWind V2V Converter, P2V Migrator." Unfortunately, I keep getting kicked out or don't have permission to post there.

Therefore, it would be nice if the thread could be moved. I hope that I will still be able to respond once it is moved.

I have a problem converting a VM (Linux Suse Enterprise 10) from ESXi Host 5.5 to a Hyper-V Host. After conversion, the VM does not boot in Hyper-V.

In ESXi, the VM’s hard drive is set up as SCSI. The converter creates a new Hyper-V VM in Gen1 and attaches the hard drive as IDE. During boot, the error appears that the hard drive cannot be recognized.

I have tried the following:
  • Conversion from ESXi Host to a newly created VM (by the converter)
  • Conversion to an existing Gen2 VM in Hyper-V (hoping the converter would adjust the hard drive parameters)
  • Changed the VM’s (ESXi) VMDK to IDE via SSH access and then converted it to a Gen1 VM
All these attempts were unsuccessful, resulting in the hard drive not being recognized.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can successfully convert the VM to Hyper-V?

Thanks to all :)

Thanks for your post here and welcome to StarWind Forum! Please try converting an individual disk.
Also make sure the secure boot is disabled for the VM.

As of now I've moved the thread to V2V section (leaving shadow post here) and asked admins to turn off the post confirmation thing, people are getting confused, which is bad...

Hello,

Apologies for the late response. I haven't had the time to actively work on the migration since then.

I looked into whether secure boot could be disabled, and I didn't find anything, except that ESXi 5.5 doesn't seem to have a secure boot option.

I used the Starwind Converter to convert the ESXi hard drive into the VHDX format required by Hyper-V. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. Could someone send me a guide on how to make the VM run on Hyper-V? In Hyper-V, I chose Generation 1. When I switch it to SCSI afterward, the screen remains black. On IDE, the VM boots, but it doesn’t find any hard drives, partitions, or bootloader.

I read that it might be necessary to manually change the kernel from SCSI to IDE after booting the VM. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any further information on this.

The Picture shows the ESXi VM i want convert to HyperV.

Tanks for your Help :)

Hi,

It can be a driver problem. Convert individual disks, please.
Please also see this guide https://www.erniecosta.com/2020/02/26/h ... t-drivers/

Thanks for the Guide :)

Before im start with it a little question about it:
This Guide works with Linux Suse 10? Because the VM of the ESXi works with OS Linux Suse 10 :c

Hi, I don't think so.
can you please make sure to remove the VMware tools before conversion?
If that does not help, please convert the VM into the OVF and deploy it in the destination.
Have a nice weekend :)
