P2V Convert Physical Machine Or Disk Option - Greyed Out?

hi there I'm new here and did lots of searching around but couldn't find a solution.

I'm trying to convert my windows 7 laptop for use in vmware workstation and have already done so with vmware converter, but that program doesn't give me the option to select pre-allocated for some reason, whereas I know starwind does. Its kind of sluggish even with all necessary tweaks so I wanted to try pre-allocating since its said this can help performance.

I'm pretty comp-savvy and I used to stream audio with this laptop so I have alot of unneccessary windows services disabled and I'm wondering if I have some that need to be turned back on.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to StarWind Forum.
Could you please re-phrase your question? P2V conversion is slow, that's true. StarWind P2V supports fixed (thick) disks.

thanks for replying.

What I'm saying is that when P2V is first opened, the first option "Convert Physical Machine Or Disk" is greyed out and not selectable, so I cannot go any further?

hope that helps.

I'm wondering what MS services may need to be enabled, since I've turned quite a few off many years ago. Rock solid machine for like 15 years.

64 bit.

I noticed that someone else asked this question last year but there was never an answer.

Could you please point me to the thread? Also, could you please let me know what build of the V2V converter you are using and what version of Windows 7 it is? Knowing the services you disabled will be helpful too.
As a workaround, you can try converting disks to VHD and then do the VHD->VMDK conversion.

You are welcome.
Sadly, I did not receive any link.
Could you please tell me more about the setup so I can ask my colleagues to look into it?

I had an internal discussion of this case. Could you please
-pull the conversion logs
-screenshots
-tell us what services are disabled
-tell us about OS, e.g., update levels.

If the **P2V (Physical to Virtual) Convert Physical Machine or Disk** option is greyed out, it could be due to compatibility issues, insufficient permissions, or an unsupported disk format. Ensure your machine meets the system requirements, and check if you're running the necessary software with administrator privileges.

It can also be that Shadow Copy service is turned off.
