"error read file"

Hi all, I have a laptop that no longer powers on but i believe the 1TB disk is ok. I would like to image the disk and boot the system into a virtual machine (Hyper-V, Virtual Box, VM ware - whichever is easiest and cheapest) as it has some software that is no longer available.

I have added the drive as a second disk to a desktop PC and can see 5 volumes. I am using an external USB drive to capture the image, and there is over 3.5TB free.

The problem i have is when i try to image the laptop drive (disk 1) the process starts, creates the VMDK file, says converting and then gives a "error read file' message. It also throughs up a "File Read Error!" prompt with retry or cancel the only options.

I cant see any disk errors in the event log and i have made a backup of the disk to the USB drive using Easus ToDo.

Any help would be appeciated.
