Hi,

I am looking at using P2V migrator to create a VM backup of a critical physical server on a monthly basis. The critical server hosts MS SQL with some specialist configurations and we plan to use the tool so that we can quickly recover the machine to a VM and then restore the DBs from an alternative backup source.

My question is will the P2V conversion make any changes to the physical machine we are converting? eg. turn it off once done or make alterations to the running system? I need to server to continue to function during and after the conversion - the only time we will being the migrated VM up is during testing and if ever needed during a DR scenario.

Thanks

Greetings,

StarWind V2V Converter/P2V Migrator is not backup/recovery software. Please use Veeam B&R or virtualize the server and use Hyper-V Replica.
V2V Converter does not make any changes to the physical machine while converting but it is not intended for backing up.

Hi Yaroslav,

Thanks for that, I am aware P2V isn't intended for backup and we do have other backup solutions in place for system state, database, file/folder etc. The use of this tool is purely to expedite the process if ever required of getting a working version of the source machine up as a VM for us to then restore the latest information on to.

Kind regards,

Matthew

Matthew,

Yes, it will work for P2V migration with no surprises for the running server.
