I am trying to do a ESXi to Hyper-V Cluster migration, and it looks like its going to work, but after about 10 minutes it says:

Code: Select all

Creating output image file
Error creating image
The network name cannot be found.
Convertation failed
I have found the log file with this in it:

Code: Select all

The log file name: 'logs\V2V_Log-20201111-081131.log' (PID 23452)
Delete log file 'logs\V2V_Log-20200930-163627.log'.

I know I cant get to \\mycluster\C$, would this be my issue? I dont believe a Windows 2019 cluster shares c$ from the cluster does it? Does this process not work to a 2019 cluster?

Any ideas please?

I have tried it on a VM without a NIC, and I get the same error.
I have tried migrating direct to a Host (not the cluster), and that works, but it adds an additional step of migrating from host to cluster which i would prefer not to do.

What network is it looking for?

thanks

Thank you for your question.
I am afraid that NIC has nothing to do with this error.

You are right.

May I wonder if you are running conversion from GUI or CLI? I mean, were you able to navigate to this folder from the GUI?

running from the GUI. in the interface i get what is in the attached image. I am not able to browse the subfolders, even though there are subfolders and they have running VMs in them.

Greetings,

Is it possible to convert the VM locally and then do storage migration to CSV? Did you run V2V as an administrator?
Let me know if any assistance is reuired.

Yes, running as Admin.

At he moment, I am running it to a Host (then I can navigate to the shared storage) and its working ok, but then to get the cluster to own it have to do a import (storage migration wont do it) to the cluster, which clones the virtual disks back to the same physical disks its already on. So its a slow process, and wont work for my very large VMs

Hi,

We have explicitly tested your conversion scenario in our lab and it worked fine.

That's right. Will this workaround work for you?

You can convert the VM locally and then do storage migration to CSV.

Yes!

+ We support live conversion with V2V now, you don't need to stop your virtual machine when converting.

Hey Anton,

Sorry to bring up an old thread and hijacking, what is the success rate of doing a live migration. I'm in the process of switching over from VM to Hyper V and we have customers who can have little to no down time. How many times are snapshots taken during the conversion?

Apologies for my ignorance never used a V2V converter before.

If needed I can create a new thread.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay and welcome to StarWind Forum. StarWind V2V can convert the VMs live. it makes only one snapshot and merges it at the end.
