Hi

I've used the SW convertor in the past with good results and downloaded the current version to convert a P2V Windows 10 x 64 to ESX 6.7u3 system. It installed on the clean W10 box OK and seemed happy with the config to convert C$ and machine to ESX.

Started it off and the % stays at 0. An hour later I retried, same result. Log below, edited for GDPR.

That's quite unusual error, I'd say.

Could you tell me how you filled Path to virtual machine field?

OK, thanks for the replay & apologies for the late reply. I think the problem was me not the s/w. As the target I used the vCenter appliance IP and not the Host IP. So in terms of the target dir, I used 'browse' and then all I saw was the datastore, which I selected.

Using the Host and not vCentre as the target, I see dirs in the datastore and can select one.

If I do that, the conversion seems to run. The GUI now shows 'stuff' and the bar is at 2% - the logs show (sample) below which looks good.

Actualy, that would be one of the things we would check
Please make sure to convert the VM to the ESXi host. Keep us posted on this case.

Sigh... ok, the convertor ran happily for about 8 hours - it was a few Tb of data - and them completed OK.

But.. when I tried to power up the new VM it failed to boot. Possibly I got the boot drive allocation wrong but had slightly lost the will to live to try again. So (sorry about this) I d/ld the VMWare convertor which did the job just fine and the new VM boots OK.

Could you share the converter logs? What exactly error did you encounter while trying to boot the VM? Was the conversion successful? Will be happy to learn about this conversion as many details as possible.

Hi again.

OK, logs attached. This run converted OK it seems but when I powered up the VM it failed to boot. I don't have the full error as I didn't capture it but the on screen text referenced Grub which I thought was odd as it was a Windows 10 VM.

The conversion was successful, so I do not think that there was an issue with V2V. I have just finished P2V conversion of my laptop to ESXi and was able to boot. That makes the question even more interesting.
If that was a GRUB-related issue, here might be a solution https://communities.vmware.com/thread/617754.
Were there any Linux partitions on the source VM?

Thanks - interesting. The original Physical box was a Dell Precision PC which was 100% Windows and had never been exposed to Linux in any form. Thanks for the link - it does seem like the same issue in broad terms.

I've certainly used the Starwind convertor in the past with no issues so let's close the case and put it down to 'one of those odd things'.
