Error opening file (2) [0] - Access is denied.

I'm trying to convert .VHDX file to whatever format VMWare Workstation uses (which I actually haven't gotten to yet.)

So I go to Local File -> picked the file "C:\ER1542161610.VHDX" and I'm getting:
Error opening file (2) [0]
Access is denied.
Even though I am running as administrator and I have just rebooted this VM, so nothing can be locking that file.

So what am I doing wrong?

Greetings,

Please make sure that the VM is shut down while converting.

I'm sorry, I'm not following you. How would anything work if I shut down the computer (i.e. VM) :)

VMs are to be shut down before conversion. Their disks are in use and cannot be converted. Unlike a converter from VMware we are unable to convert VMs on the fly.
Find out more about conversion prerequisites here https://www.starwindsoftware.com/v2v-he ... tions.html.

OK, sorry, We're probably talking about two different things. I am not converting a VM. I'm running V2V converter app in a VM trying to have it convert my VHD file into format that can be used in VMWare Workstation 15 (.vmdk, if I'm not mistaking.) And that's where I see that error. Other than that VM has nothing to do with it.

I am sorry for such a misunderstanding.
I'm running V2V converter app in a VM trying to have it convert my VHD file
You are running V2V inside a VM and trying to convert its local disk. Did I get it right? If so, it is impossible to achieve with StarWind V2V Converter.
The disk you are trying to convert is in use by the VM where you run V2V. For successful conversion, try powering off that VM and run V2V conversion from a different VM.

No. I have a VHD file that was created from a totally different physical computer. I'm just converting it in a VM. That's the only reference to a VM there is.

Is the VM that owns this VHD powered off?
If none of VMs own the VHD, could you provide me with V2V converter logs?

Dude, I keep telling you that there's no VM associated with the VHD file. I made it with disk2vhd tool (from MSFT) from a physical computer. I'm just trying to convert that VHD file in a VM. That's the only connection to a VM.

So how do I get those logs? (steps.)

Sorry, it took me a while to get it. :(
Please, try converting again and provide me with the logs from here C:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind V2V Image Converter\logs.

Hey, not problem.

You know, I guess I restored from a snapshot and deleted that installation. But now when I tried it in a new VM it seemed not to show that same error. So I guess I have no idea what happened last time. Sorry I couldn't give you more.

Although, I've witnessed another quite frustrating detail. Why is it not allowing me to read or write from a mapped network drive when using "Local file" option? It just doesn't show those mapped drives as an option.

Sorry for the delayed response.
Yes, Local option, works only with the local storage.
Try selecting Network option while browsing for the file to convert. You might be able to get some files from all the PCs/servers in the domain. Please note that access to PCs/servers should be allowed too.

I had the same problem and when using S2V version 8 I was able to convert normally, I got this version in filehorse.

This can be a connectivity problem too.
