Problems initializing Hyper-v VM

Postby danisg81 » Fri Nov 13, 2015 3:28 pm

Hi, I have converted a vkmd disk to vhd using V2V Converted and it seems has finished ok. I've created a new VM on Hyper-V attaching de vhd disk but the machine does not start, only a black screen appears.

The vm is a Win 7 professional 64 bits.

Could you please provide more details please? What is the original hypervisor, and what is the source? Error codes would be helpful as well.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm going to explain the steps I've carried on:

1- The original vm is hosted on esxi 4. I have exported the machine using vspher client (the machine has a Win 7 64 bits with 2 cores and 4096 Mb RAM memory).
2- I've converted the exported disk using V2V (vkmd to vhd) with "growable image" option.
VKMD disk features:
- File format: VMware stream-optimized image
- Size: 32.0 GB
3- The process ends successfully.
4- I've create a new VM on Hyper-V (Win Server 2008 Standard) with the same features as on VMware (2 cores and 4096 Mb RAM memory). I've attached the vhd converted file to the new machine.
5- It seems all it's ok, but when the machine starts a black window appears.

I don't know where I can get error codes you are asking me.

Thanks and regards.

Hi Anatoly,

Could you answer me please? I'm completly lost with this issue. I don't undestand why Hyper-v does not recognize the vhd converted disk.

Thanks and regards.

Have you tried to access Windows Recovery Console on this machine to try to find out what happens to the drive?

I'can't.

I've tried to start the machine pushing F8 in order to start the Rapair Mode, but it doen not work, a black screen appears.

Also I've tried with a Windows 7 DVD, starting a new Windows installation and selecting Repair Mode option instead of start the new installation. Then I've tried to repair it but it doen not work.

Please I need help!

Hi, Danisg!

I wonder if it is possible for you to re-convert Hyper-V image back to VMWare and re-mount it again. Will that work?
In this case, we will be able to find out where is the root cause of the problem - in the image itself or inside the VMs hardware.
