When trying to convert a vmdk file to vhd, I keep getting the following error message when I select the vmdk file: Error opening file (2) [5]
It seems to work on very small vmdk files that are only 20GB in size, but the ones that I have that are 200 - 300GB in size all get this message. I see there was a previous post on this about doing this across a network, but the files I'm trying to convert are local to the server. What can I do to resolve this?

This error is an 'Access denied' error. It seems that that vmdk file (or the one it points to) is locked by another process or you do not have sufficient privileges to access that file.

Not sure what would be locking it or why I wouldn't have access. Works just fine when I convert with a different program.

Do you use hypervisor-shippe volume converter that works fine? What account you're running working app and non-working StarWind Converter? Same or not?

I had the same problem and just right-clicked on the converter program and used Run as Administrator (windows 7, server 2008) and it works.

Good point! We'll update installer to run app with admin rights by default. Thanks again!

Hey, did you resolve this?

I'm getting the same kinda error, except that I am running as admin.

Greetings,

Please make sure that the VM is shut down and no backup is running.
