An automated system is publishing VMware VMs in OVA format. We want to free users from needing VMWare Player licenses, so we want to convert the OVA to a Hyper-V VM.

So far, I've been able to extract the VMDK virtual hard disk from the OVA, and convert it to VHDX with Starwind V2V. The resulting VHDX can be mounted on my computer, and does appear to contain a valid Windows install. However, the partition is no longer marked as "Boot".

When I try to load the VHDX in a Hyper-V VM, it can't find an OS. Any suggestions on where I went wrong, or alternative tactics I can try?

Please make sure to remove the VMWare tools or Hyper-V integration tools from the VM. Try also to use IDE controller for boot. Play around with the boot loader too. If you connect that disk to any other VM, does it see the File system on top?
