Re: Deduplication for VM Problem beta

I will go ahead and wait for V8 to be closer to RTM and try again. As an update I turned the VMs off and waited to see if SWS would do dedupe but it didn't. Note though that to do these test you have to setup some VMs (multiple) and let it run for weeks to see if space reclaim is really working. SWS...

Re: Deduplication for VM Problem

in this particular case the vms have been running for about a month. I would think that would be enough time to dedupe. also another interesting thing is the size has grown 7gb in 4 days. from windows point of view that size is still the same but from the drive that is holding the sws spspx files is...

Re: Deduplication for VM Problem

Hi Anatoly Yes , You Are Correct these VM have been running and in use. tomorrow I will be turning them off if you need me to check something. The reason they are still running is I was under the impression that starwinds inline deduplication meant a file could be open for deduplication to work. If ...

Re: Deduplication for VM Problem

starwindsoftware.JPG Hello I wasn't sure if I sure post my update to this thread here or in the Beta Forum. but I have since downloaded the beta version and have setup a deduplication disk with using the deletion support option. after connecting I have copied over 2 VMs both 2008r2. one is 27 gb th...

Re: Licensing question with Dedupe

ahh thanks for the info Anton, in that case my follow up question may be moot. but let me mention it anyway so you know where my first question was coming from. So the reason I was asking was, I think I found a shortcoming to the current policy assuming the free version and licensed version work the...

Licensing question with Dedupe

Hi, I have been doing some testing and there something I don't think I'm sure about when It comes to licensed storage and dedupe. My first question ill start with is, if I have the 1tb version of SWS and I setup a replicated 1tb dedupe disk between nodes, is the software monitoring how much the actu...

Re: Deduplication for VM Problem

Thanks so much for your time. Glad I only used test data.

one more thing, you mentioned the possibility of a future release improving the deletion, re-use. Are you at liberty to share if V8 will have block re-use/ deletion support.

thanks again

Re: Deduplication for VM Problem

Thanks for the Reply, I understand the current version "not being able to free blocks/reuse blocks currently". but I'm still a little confused. does the below link here, that describes deduplication benefits for VM's only intended to just store cold vm images not actual running VM's? http:...

Re: Deduplication for VM Problem

I just wanted to bump this since there hasn't been input yet, also wanted to post the status since I posted to show the spdata file is still growing although the from windows perspective it really hasn't. I would really appreciate some feedback we are testing out SWS and the viability of using the d...

Deduplication for VM Problem

Hello Hoping some one could shed some light on this. Im having (maybe) an issue with deduplicated disk , or I may be mis understanding something. so ill get right to it. I have a deduplicated disk that has 4 2008r2 vms on it 3 of the VM's are almost vanilla except they are domain controllers. the 4t...

Re: deduplication with High availability

ok i figured it out, the last option that says to connect to device really means virtual device. where the previous option refers to IMG vdisk. then you can try deduplicated or other types of vdisks. But i do have a follow up question . if i copy the same 10gb file 15 times it will sho up as filling...

deduplication with High availability

Hello I wanted to check and see if i was missing anything. My question is in regards to a deduplicated HA disk. I initially believed this was possible. in this previous thread http://www.starwindsoftware.com/forums/post16541.html?hilit=high availability deduplication#p16541 it says it now supports o...
