Re: Learning SANs

Hi mate,

It would be great if you share some technical details of your future configuration where starwind is involved. Just to share some ideas and discuss?

Re: Azure experience

The other point is that you are facing such issues in Azure. It's rather weird, so looks like something is misconfigured. Could you please give a brief description of your configuration and goals you are trying to achieve? Is it a POC or production?

Re: Azure experience

I've been suffering from such kind of warnings on my older homelab servers. After some digging I have found following parameters in c:\Program Files\StarWind Software\StarWind\StarWind.cfg : <CmdExecTimeWarningLimitInMs value="20000"/> <!--If command execution time is more than this value(...

Re: Recovery After Power Outage

Yepp, exactly. In the case of a clean and graceful shutdown, everything will go up and running fully automatically since it's a supported scenario for both starwind and ms cluster.

Re: Recovery After Power Outage

Imagine, if your servers go out of power with a delay between them, so one will have consistent data and the other one not and they will start syncing automatically in the wrong direction... not the best case I believe. Just get a UPS for one of them, so it shut downs cleanly and goes automatically ...

Re: Management Console Won't Open

You're welcome, mate.

As for console problems, I advise you to take a look into C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\StarWind\5\Console. There are pretty enough logs in there that can put some light on your issue I hope.

Re: L2 Cache in WB Mode in Build 8.0.8730?

Noticed almost the same performance issues with L2 cache a while ago. Starwind officials promised somewhere on the forum - they will significantly improve L2 performance in the upcoming build. So far I am waiting for an update and using a flat device on SSDs for performance-critical VM's and LSFS on...

Re: Management Console Won't Open

Hi, Since you still have a working console on one of the hosts, that should not be a problem. I usually use management console from my laptop or separate management machine without having to RDP to starwind servers each time. Anyways, I believe a problem with a console is fixed after the server rebo...

AFAIK Veeam dedupes (compresses) it's own backups already. So you want to dedupe already compressed data once again?

Re: Free SAN How to connect?

Hi Jviera, The free version of starwind does not allow external block-level access over iSCSI to your LUNs. But Windows Scale-Out-File-Server does the job. Install the role on both servers along with MS Failover Cluster, arm it with locally mirrored CSVs provided by starwind and give it out as SMB 3...

Just remove the disk from Cluster Shared Volumes in Failover Cluster and then readd it again.

Re: Designing a new system. Need some input :)

RAID10 if possible to sleep well at night :)

I have 4 x Samsung 850 EVO in RAID10. Using them as an HA device for performance critical VM's and for pagefiles. Works like a charm.

Re: SW8, Fusion IO card usage

There is no difference in performance for sure. So you can configure it according to your wishes. I prefer using vmdk since it's just more flexible in terms of possible reconfiguration/storage provisioning.
