Re: How to replace non-failed VSAN storage

Here's another one that is an enhanced and working version of a StarWind-provided example. I like this one because it makes it much easier and clearer to get detailed synch status. I found other versions less illuminating. GetHASyncState.ps1 # # Get synchronization status of specified HA device and ...

Re: How to replace non-failed VSAN storage

OK, here you go. I'll start with text notes. Script to force Microsoft Cluster Aware Updates to pause and wait until StarWind nodes are fully synchronized before applying Windows Updates, in case an update requires a host to be rebooted. This is an enhaced and working solution based on the CAU.ps1 e...

Re: How to replace non-failed VSAN storage

Thanks for your update. I had to stop/kill the VSAN service on both hosts to get it to restart synchronization. Restarting StarWind VSAN only on the affected server should be sufficient. I tried that first. If the drive had flat failed, I wonder if I could have gotten away with cloning or even just...

Re: How to replace non-failed VSAN storage

Oh I agree about RAID vs backups. I run full backups to a separate BDR system with its own internal RAID plus swapped storage for offsite. The VSAN is back online, after using Windows to copy content from the old drive to the new one. I had to stop/kill the VSAN service on both hosts to get it to re...

Re: How to replace non-failed VSAN storage

You're right, yaroslav, this is a non-RAID setup. I'm deliberately pushing it, running as lean as possible, and using the VSAN as my RAID. Over the years I've been so conditioned and accustomed to all the hardware redundancy of "real server iron", I could hardly conceive of it. it took me ...

Re: How to replace non-failed VSAN storage

The procedure you shared can be performed without the downtime (i.e., Maintenance mode). You can have the production running while the other serer undergoes the maintenance as you do not need to turn off the other server. 1. Make sure to have a backup. Copy StarWind.cfg too from C:\Program Files\St...

Re: Safe emergency shutdown?

Thanks Yaroslav, no, unless you have anything else for this, I can take what you sent to see what makes sense for my needs.

Re the MS docs... yes, that sounds like them. They love to make a short story long. ;-)

Re: Safe emergency shutdown?

Thank you Yaroslav. That's a start. Here's something that aligns to what I have in mind. I would suggest StarWind provide at least a template script that could be used with Windows Group Policy, as in Local Computer Policy | Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Scripts (Startup/Shutdown). See...

Safe emergency shutdown?

Recently I needed to do an emergency shutdown of our cluster (power failure, running on UPS), and I did it by simply using the Windows server shutdown procedure. When I started the servers later, StarWind had to do a full sync. I know that there is a recommended procedure of stopping the StarWind se...

Re: How beneficial is L1 write-through cache?

Thank you Yaroslav, you too! :D Note, I was only asking -- very carefully -- about L1 write THROUGH cache. It sounds like you are saying that implementing L1 write-through cache, without any other cache, is basically not likely to be worth the bother. Oh well, it sounded like a safe and easy thing t...

How beneficial is L1 write-through cache?

I'm just curious about performance and recommendations for L1 write-through cache. I looked through the documents and white papers and don't really see what I'm looking for. They're great for how to do it, but is it worth it? Say I have a StarWind VSAN implemented with no L1 or L2 cache, no hardware...

Re: How to get maintenance status

Just a quick update, Yaroslav -- since the license fix, the VSAN has been ticking along like a clock. No problems whatever. I even went through a Cluster Aware Update cycle with no problems. Cool.

Thanks for all your help. StarWind is amazing!

Re: How to get maintenance status

Yaroslav, I wanted to thank you very much for your help today! As you showed me, it turns out that problem with the FCM CSV disk not coming online was my own fault -- I needed to bring the nodes online first! I thought I had to have the drives working before the nodes could start. Odd that the FCM v...

Re: How to get maintenance status

Ah! I see the problem. The email address you used is legitimate -- I provided it -- but it is supposed to forward to another mailbox, and for some reason it did not. My apologies, and I appreciate your helpfulness! Thank you, the keys worked! I could not go directly to key #2, I had to apply #1 firs...
