that seems to have caused the illegal request in lin_tape.errorlog.

Vallery, Please see the log files I just sent. You'll discover an illegal request in the lin_tape.trace that may help you correlate what is going wrong. This driver and backup software works fine with literally hundreds of brands of physical tape libraryies and many VTLs (some using iSCSI protocols)...

Rob - Windows Server 2012 R2 is definitely supported. I'm dealing with Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 as the topic title suggests, but to avoid confusion I should not have shortened the name in my reply. I didn't mean to create confusion.

After a failed attempt to install on Storage Server, I read that it is not supported by Starwind - can't start the service during install. I don't have a choice for this environment and need to install on Storage Server. I didn't realize there was much difference between Standard and Storage Server....
