Re: Cache on hardware controller VS StarWind cache

1) OK - I have worked with an engineer and they concluded it is normal. With that said, what kind of SAN read/write performance should we expect "in comparison" to native disk performance (with or without write-back enabled)? 2) OK - was hoping the 2nd starwind node that is shutdown could ...

Re: Cache on hardware controller VS StarWind cache

We have a Native SAN 2 node cluster and have been testing disk performance and high availability scenarios. We have some concerns, both of which relate to starwind write-back caching, on the disk performance penalty introduced by the SW SAN and shutdown scenarios requiring manual intervention. 1) Wi...

Re: native san setup specifics

Thanks for the info - I think I almost have it figured out:
1) The heartbeat NIC could also be used for the VM switch if you only had two NICs?
2) If you use the hearbeat NICs for cluster/management traffic, I take it you are connecting each to a switch (and not direct NIC to NIC)?

Re: native san setup specifics

Good explanation, thank you. Two more questions to clarify: 1) When you say for hyper-v purposes, are you referring to a dedicated nic for hyper-v management? And all LAN traffic would still go through the heartbear nic, correct? 2) Is it not possible to include the host os on the primary partition ...

native san setup specifics

Hello, After reading through the resources and forum, we still have some questions: 1. What is the 'minimum' number of gigabit nics needed for a 2 node native san hyperv cluster? It looks like just two per this document: http://www.starwindsoftware.com/customer/white-paper/StarWind-Native-SAN-for-Hy...

Re: Native SAN sizing requirements

Ok - so to summarize it appears to be fair to say that in general Native SAN for HV is 'not' very resource intensive ('except' only with CPU if using deduplication)?

Re: Planning starwind deployment - couple of questions

Hmmm...Unless the info here is no longer accurate what am I missing? http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2012/07/26/types-of-failover-operations-in-hyper-v-replica.aspx Since Test Failover does NOT impact your production workload and does NOT impact your ongoing replication, it is reco...

Re: Tape Redirector Linux vm

Yes, I understand that but I'd like to know if TR works with a Linux vm? If not, is there something similar to what you are trying to achieve with TR, but for a linux vm?

Re: Native SAN sizing requirements

1) That's what I wondered - but would we risk getting support from starwind if we don't use a E5620? And would a E5620 suffice if we did enable dedupe?
2) great
3) So would a simple hardware RAID 1 on SATA drives suffice for this project?

Native SAN sizing requirements

Hello, We are curious how to properly size a very small and simple 2 node Native SAN for Hyper-v. It will run a single SQL 2008 R2 server vm, 6GB RAM. 50GB database. I noticed the minimum CPU listed by starwind specifically is the E5620 and 4GB RAM: 1. For just a single low use vm would a E5603 suff...

Tape Redirector Linux vm

Hello,

I'd done some searching and the answer is probably no - but want to confirm, is there anyway to use tape redirector with a hyper-v linux vm? Are there any other suggestions to do this?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Planning starwind deployment - couple of questions

Hi Anton, Good info, but I believe Hyper-V Replica does allow you to start VM on another host to verify replica? They call it a 'test failover to a replica server" - the replication continues in the background normally. Thanks, Chris Microsoft is here and there to sell you Windows licenses. So ...
