Re: Baffling Performance Issues

Now we're where I want to be. One of the support techs mentioned something in an email about sync channels and that clicked my brain why my writes were so much slower than my reads. I added more sync channels and now you will see exactly what you would expect from a 4 x NIC RAID 50 solution. I hope ...

Re: Baffling Performance Issues

I believe I finally figured it out but thought I would document it here for others that could use the help. I had been using 1 /27 subnet for all network adapters in the toplogy. I noticed when I went to look at the multipath options that it was detecting something like 72 paths to one target which ...

Re: Baffling Performance Issues

A few more notes. First, just in case there is doubt, below is the performance when ran right on the starwind server: physical.png I'm starting to think the issue might be Jumbo Frames. I returned the MTU in ESX to 1500 and disabled jumbo frames on the Starwind server. They are still enabled on the ...

Baffling Performance Issues

I am in need of help, and not sure what to do at this point. I have been banging my head against the wall all day with performance issues. Right now I have 2 nodes in HA on Starwind. Each with 4 x 1GB NICS. 1 is for management, 1 is for sync, and 2 are the addresses actually being used for the iSCSI...

Re: Etherchannel vs Round Robin

I may not have been very clear before, so let me back up. No Teaming/etherchannel/bonding is occurring at this time. I currently have 3 ESX hosts, each with 4 NICS with MTU=9000 Jumbo Frames. Those are going through a stack of Cisco 2960S gigabit switches, also with Jumbo Frames enabled. The Starwin...

Re: Cache on hardware controller VS StarWind cache

The scenario I mentioned was with an HA pair. The UPS had a catastrophic failure(rare, I know but it happens) and so both nodes dropped at the exact same time along with the rest of the rack. Luckily we only lost one VM we didn't care about(or else we would have restored from tape) but it was enough...

Re: Cache on hardware controller VS StarWind cache

With all due respect to the above reply, we are using controller cache, and disabling Starwind cache. We ran into a bad situation a while back ago where we were using Starwind cache instead of controller cache, and unfortunately our UPS did actually die causing an entire data center outage. We got l...

Etherchannel vs Round Robin

The title is pretty self explanatory. With a multi-nic ESX host, and Multi-Nic starwind HA setup will I get the best performance with Round Robin or with an Etherchannel? Right now in RR mode, I'm getting gigabit wire speeds(around 120MB/s). I'm wondering if I went with Etherchannel would I be able ...

3 node replication

We are considering purchasing the license to add a 3rd node to our HA environment next year but the question I have is how replication works for the 3rd node. Currently the design thoughts are to install the 3rd node locally and let everything sync, and then overnight the server to the offsite locat...

Re: Standard image to HA?

It is possible but not without at least some downtime. What I'm thinking is it would be nice if there was a way to just like right click and add HA partner, similar to how you can change an HA partner in an already existing one.

Re: Standard image to HA?

The problem with that approach is that with running VM's inside of it, they are taken offline from the ESX hosts, and when you bring it back online the new HA target has a different ID from the existing target so ESX doesn't know how to find his VM's.

Standard image to HA?

Hey everyone, I finally have everything dialed in the way I want it but I'm wondering if it is possible to convert an existing target/image to HA without having to take it offline. This is serving up a large VMFS datastore and I would like to turn it into an HA target. Of course the datastore ID has...

Re: VMWare Performance Tuning

I ran the iperf commands you listed and was able to saturate a gigabit link every single time. I have created a 4GB RAM disk on one of the starwind servers and used the Microsoft iSCSI initiator on the other starwind server to mount the RAM disk. I am attaching the output of ATTO with queue depths 4...
