Re: Replication never goes over 1Gbit

You could remove the replica for the device you want to test, then add it back with a full sync.

Re: NIC iSCSi offloading: Experience & feedback

Unless booting to iSCSI, I have never seen a performance gain from doing this. It is a nice idea, but our performance actually went down considerably when this was configured.

Re: Data at rest encryption

Agree on both counts, but he was only talking at rest only. Bitlocker isn't too horrible for overhead. So my question is, do you support writing and reading from a bitlocker volume? Also, I didn't think you supported moving the targets.

Re: Expected Speeds

Typically you will lose 10-20% of native speeds for iSCSI depending on HA and a ton of other variables, but in your case at the bus layer you have a problem. SAS typically = 6Gbps so you would need 6 1Gbps cards to even make that a fair fight(probably 7 depending on the length of the run and whether...

Re: Virtual Hard Disk Maximum Size?

Hi, the maximum size for a virtual hard disk is 2,040 gigabytes. The virtual hard disk provides storage for a virtual machine. In case of a virtual hard disk which is attached to the IDE controller, can't exceed 127 GB. Chris, In 2008 you are correct, but in 2012 Microsoft created the VHDX drives t...

Re: Data at rest encryption

Just a curiosity, but as I understand it. StarWind functions in user space, so why aren't you able to just use Bitlocker from Microsoft?

Server 2012 TCP Settings

I can't add the following to the topic, so I created a separate topic. Please add them to the main settings topic, or let me know if I need to change to a custom template. netsh int tcp set supplemental template=datacenter netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled netsh int tcp set global chimney=enabled...

Re: Full Synchronization

Normally I just reboot after confirming synchronization is completed. But we are changing that internally and our Write-Back caching usage. I understand the reasons for why this takes so long, but I have had 0 luck convincing management to let me use RAID 0, or RAID 1/10 due to the risks/expense of ...

Full Synchronization

Can anyone please explain the algorithm that forces a full sync? I'm using StarWind to virtualize over 140TB of data, so obviously this takes quite some time to full sync. Over the past year I have rebooted my Starwind boxes 6-10 times without ever having to do a full sync. This past weekend, we had...

Re: NativeSAN Design - Feedback

DELL lowers the warranty on their SSD's so be careful there. Also, 3gbps SSD isn't worth the money most days unless you are doing complete random, using it for caching may actually slow things down depending on the type of cache used. I have found the DELL RAID controllers to be awesome for Write-Ba...

Re: Hyper-V Server Setup - problem formatting HA target

I was not offended by the title lol, just confused. I don't really understand wanting to do diskless boot for a Hyper-V host though? What is gained aside from problems? I have been getting some serious performance improvements out of 2012, so I can't wait to move my production hosts to 2012 instead ...

Re: Hyper-V Server Setup - problem formatting HA target

Actually, I'm really confused by the whole process here. Why are you booting a Hyper-V server to an iSCSI volume? Even if you get it running, I'm almost certain that it isn't supported. I understand that you may be testing boot to iSCSI or something like that, but the title of the post is misleading...

Re: MPIO: Poor performance using Starwind 6.0

You may be right, but the best test will be to load up a system locally using Hyper-V and time your compiles, then move the vhd to iSCSI storage and try again. I honestly don't think you will see as big a difference as you think, but you then you will know if it is a problem or not.

Re: MPIO: Poor performance using Starwind 6.0

I took a much closer look at your tests. I think you are really seeing the difference between TCP/iSCSI and SAS/SATA. They use very different mechanisms to do the same thing. If you have it available move your SSD's to SATA II connections and retest. In a perfect world with MPIO enabled that is the ...

Re: Drive Pooling, SMB and iSCSI?

iSCSI is a block device, you cannot "share" it. Even if you used a RAW disk, this disk can't be used by StarWind and SMB at the same time(there are ways, but performance would suffer). I would recommend testing NFS under windows as I do think it works exactly the way you want. My question ...
